Background of the Study
Public speaking is a critical skill in Nigerian political debates, where clear phonetic enunciation can significantly influence public perception and voter engagement. This study examines the phonetic enunciation strategies employed by political figures during debates, focusing on aspects such as articulation, stress, and intonation (Folarin, 2023). Effective enunciation is essential for conveying messages clearly and persuasively, particularly in high-stakes political environments where every word matters. Political debaters often modify their speech patterns to enhance clarity, assert authority, and connect with diverse audiences. This research investigates the relationship between phonetic enunciation and successful public speaking techniques in Nigerian political debates by analyzing audio recordings and conducting perceptual evaluations (Adeniyi, 2024). It further explores how these techniques are influenced by regional accents and individual speaking styles, shedding light on the strategies that contribute to persuasive political communication. By providing a comprehensive analysis of phonetic performance, the study aims to offer recommendations for training and improving public speaking in the political arena (Toyin, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of clear phonetic enunciation in political debates, there is limited research on how Nigerian politicians employ public speaking techniques to enhance their message delivery. Existing studies tend to focus on rhetoric and content rather than the phonetic nuances that contribute to effective communication (Bolaji, 2023). This gap in knowledge makes it difficult to understand the specific speech modifications that lead to improved audience comprehension and persuasion. Furthermore, the influence of regional accent variation on enunciation and overall message clarity remains underexplored. This study aims to fill these gaps by providing an in-depth analysis of the phonetic enunciation strategies used in Nigerian political debates, offering insights that can inform training programs and communication guidelines (Ibrahim, 2024).
